Coffee and health: 10 questions people actually ask

Coffee and health is one of those topics where everyone has a "fact" to share, but very few have actually slogged through the clinical data. I've spent more time than I'd like to admit reading meta-analyses when I should have been roasting coffee. Here's what the science says as of April 2026 — no hype, no scare stories.
1. Can coffee help prevent certain diseases?
The research is pretty encouraging. Moderate coffee consumption — roughly 3 to 5 cups a day — is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and liver disease.
That said, "linked to lower risk" isn't the same as "prevents." Coffee isn't medicine. But it's reassuring to know your daily cups might be doing some good. If you're curious about how decaf keeps these compounds intact, I've written a full guide to the Swiss Water Process.
2. Does coffee affect heart health?
For most of us, coffee isn't just "fine" for the heart — it might be slightly protective. A 12-year study following over 449,000 people found that 2 to 3 cups a day was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and early death. That held for all coffee types, including decaf.
A note on brewing: If you struggle with high cholesterol, the way you brew matters. Unfiltered coffee (French press, Turkish, cafetiere) contains compounds called cafestol and kahweol that can raise cholesterol levels. Using a paper filter — like a V60 or drip machine — removes most of these compounds. A 2020 study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology confirmed this makes a real difference.
If you have an existing heart condition or arrhythmia, it's worth talking to your doctor about caffeine. Some people are just more sensitive than others.
3. Can it help with weight management?
Caffeine does give your metabolism a temporary nudge. A 2022 systematic review confirmed that caffeine has a measurable effect on fat metabolism, and an earlier study found that a single 100mg dose can increase your resting metabolic rate by 3 to 4%.
However, I have to be honest: if your "coffee" is a large latte with three pumps of syrup and a mountain of whipped cream, you've turned a zero-calorie drink into a 300+ calorie dessert. The coffee isn't the problem; it's the accessories.
4. Does coffee cause dehydration?
This is the myth that refuses to die. While caffeine is a mild diuretic, the water in your cup more than makes up for it.
A 2014 study in PLOS ONE found no significant differences in hydration markers between coffee and water consumption. A meta-analysis went further, concluding caffeine does not lead to excessive fluid loss in healthy adults. The NHS counts tea and coffee towards your daily fluid intake. 5. Can coffee improve physical performance?
If you see athletes drinking an espresso before a race, there's a reason. Caffeine increases adrenaline and mobilises fatty acids for energy.
A 2018 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine confirmed caffeine improves endurance performance. An earlier review of sport-specific studies found an average improvement of around 3% — which is why you'll see athletes reaching for a coffee before competition. Recent research suggests it can also improve velocity and power during weightlifting.
If you train in the evening, stick to decaf to avoid ruining your sleep. You won't get the adrenaline spike, but you also won't be staring at the ceiling at 2am. More on that in our health benefits of decaf post.
6. How does coffee affect mental health?
It's a double-edged sword. In moderation, it's a mood booster. A meta-analysis of over 330,000 participants found that coffee intake was associated with a significantly decreased risk of depression, with each extra cup reducing risk by about 8%. A more recent analysis found the lowest risk at around 2 to 3 cups per day.
But "more" isn't always "better." Too much caffeine can mimic or worsen anxiety, leaving you jittery and irritable. If you're naturally prone to anxiety, switching to decaf can make a genuine difference to your daily stress levels.
Two to three cups a day seems to be the sweet spot. If you're drinking six espressos and wondering why you feel wired, the answer is in the cup.
7. Is coffee addictive?
Let's call it a "mild physical dependence." You won't find yourself selling your furniture to fund a flat white habit, but if you go cold turkey, your body will notice.
A critical review in Psychopharmacology found that withdrawal symptoms — usually headaches and fatigue — typically start 12 to 24 hours after your last cup, peak at 20 to 51 hours, and can last up to 9 days. If you want to cut back, I always recommend tapering down slowly rather than stopping abruptly. Switching to decaf for your afternoon cups is one way to do that without giving up the ritual.
8. How does coffee affect sleep?
Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, the chemical that builds up in your brain to make you feel sleepy.
The problem is its half-life. On average, caffeine has a half-life of about 5 hours, though this varies between individuals from 1.5 to 9.5 hours depending on genetics. If you have a coffee at 4pm, half of that caffeine is still buzzing around your brain at 9pm. Some people process it faster than others, but if you struggle to drift off, try a caffeine cutoff at midday.

9. Can pregnant women drink coffee?
The NHS recommends a maximum of 200mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy — that's roughly one standard mug of brewed coffee.
High intake has been linked to increased risks. A dose-response meta-analysis found that each extra 100mg of caffeine per day was associated with a 14% increase in the risk of pregnancy loss. A separate analysis found a corresponding 7% increase in risk of low birth weight.
Because our Swiss Water Process decaf is 99.9% caffeine-free and uses no chemical solvents, it's often the go-to for the parents-to-be in our community. With only 2-5mg of caffeine per cup, you'd need to drink dozens to reach the 200mg limit.

10. Does coffee stain teeth?
Sadly, yes. The tannins and chlorogenic acids in coffee build up on your enamel over time, leading to that familiar yellowish tint. A 2024 study confirmed that coffee characteristics including chlorogenic acid content and bean type significantly affect the degree of discolouration.
A few pro-tips from someone who drinks far too much coffee:
- Rinse your mouth with water immediately after drinking.
- Don't brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes — coffee is acidic, and brushing too soon can scrub that softened enamel away.
- Keep up with your dental hygienist. It's a small price to pay for a good morning brew.
