What is decaf coffee?

Decaf coffee, short for decaffeinated coffee, refers to coffee beans that have had at least 99.9% of the caffeine removed. The process of removing the caffeine from the beans is done before roasting and grinding. Good decaf coffee shouldn’t compromise on flavour or quality, which is why our carefully selected, chemical-free, natural process helps to retain all of that Raw Bean taste we love so much.

What is the process for making decaf coffee?

It’s believed that decaf coffee was discovered in the early 1900s when a shipment of caffeinated coffee was soaked in seawater whilst being transported overseas. This resulted in a decrease in caffeine content. The coffee merchant later tried to recreate this by using benzene. Nowadays, making decaf coffee doesn’t include chemicals found in volcanoes (ouch!).

The Swiss Water Process

The Swiss Water Process is a method for producing decaffeinated coffee created in Switzerland in the 1930s and later scaled for commercial production in the 1980s. The Swiss Water Process is a sustainable, transparent decaffeination method using water and the natural compounds in green coffee to gently remove caffeine—without leaving the residue chemical solvents. It preserves the unique origin flavours, taste, and characteristics of the bean, resulting in amazing coffee without caffeine. Because enjoying great coffee at any time of day should never be a compromise in taste—or values. Swiss Water Process decaffeinated coffee is a chemical-free choice for coffee lovers.

Common questions

Is Raw Bean decaf really caffeine-free?
Just about. We use the Swiss Water Process, which takes out 99.9% of the caffeine while keeping the flavour and aroma, so it's about as close to caffeine-free as decaf gets.
Do you use chemicals to decaffeinate it?
No. The Swiss Water Process only uses water, temperature and time, so nothing but the caffeine is taken out.
