Decaf Coffee, Definitely

Decaf coffee has a reputation problem, and most of it is deserved. Strip the caffeine out with chemical solvents and the flavour tends to leave with it. That is how decaf became the drink of polite compromise.

Ours isn't that. Every Raw Bean decaf is decaffeinated with the Swiss Water® Process: water, temperature and time, nothing else. It leaves the coffee 99.9% caffeine-free and the taste alone. Roasted in the UK. It holds a Great Taste Award, and that's an award for coffee, not “good for a decaf”.

The range is below: beans, ground, pods and coffee bags, all the same Colombian single origin. Still deciding? The common questions are answered further down the page.

What is decaf coffee?

Decaf coffee is coffee made at least 99.9% caffeine-free before roasting. The bean, the origin and the roast still decide how it tastes; the decaffeination method decides how much of that survives. Ours is the Swiss Water® Process, which uses no chemical solvents at any point: the caffeine leaves, the flavour stays. Read how the process works.

Common questions

How is the caffeine removed?
With water, and nothing else. The Swiss Water Process soaks green beans until the caffeine migrates out; the oils and sugars that carry the flavour stay put. No chemical solvents at any stage. How the Swiss Water Process works.
Is decaf coffee completely caffeine-free?
Almost. Decaf sold in the UK is at least 99.9% caffeine-free, the standard the roasted-decaf trade works to, and Swiss Water decaf sits at the low end even of that. A cup of ours carries around 2–7mg, against 80–100mg in a regular brew. You would need about 30 cups to match your morning coffee. How much caffeine is in decaf?
Can I drink decaf coffee in the evening?
That's rather the point of it. At 2–7mg a cup, decaf sits well below the level that troubles sleep for most people. A proper coffee at 9pm, no ceiling-staring at 2am. Decaf and sleep: what the science says.
Is decaf coffee good for you?
Decaf keeps most of what people drink coffee for, the antioxidants included, and leaves out the caffeine. If you're pregnant, caffeine-sensitive or cutting down, it's the easy swap. Is decaf good for you?
Does decaf taste different from regular coffee?
Badly made decaf does. That's where the reputation came from. Chemical-free decaffeination and a proper roast close the gap; ours is Great Taste Award-winning coffee. The fairest test is a bag of it.
Beans, ground, pods or coffee bags?
Beans if you grind at home. Ground for cafetière, filter or espresso. Pods if you own a Nespresso machine. Coffee bags if all you have is a kettle: it brews like a teabag. All four are the same Swiss Water Colombian single origin.
