Decaf gets a lot of questions and a fair bit of scepticism. Can coffee without the caffeine actually taste good? We think so. We're the #1 selling Swiss Water Process decaf brand in major UK supermarkets, and our Definitely Decaf range has won six Great Taste Awards. So we know a thing or two about making decaf that doesn't feel like a compromise.
Here are the questions we get asked most.
1. What is decaf coffee?
Decaf is regular coffee that's had most of its caffeine removed before roasting. The beans go through a process to extract the caffeine while keeping the flavour and aroma intact.
Decaf isn't completely caffeine-free. In the UK and Europe, coffee beans and ground coffee must contain no more than 0.1% caffeine by dry weight — so at least 99.9% of the caffeine has to be gone. The US takes a slightly different approach and requires a 97% reduction. In practice, a 240ml cup of brewed decaf typically has around 1-5mg of caffeine, compared to 95-200mg in a regular cup. 2. How is coffee decaffeinated?
There are four main methods. All of them work on green (unroasted) beans, and each takes a different approach:
Swiss Water Process — An all-natural method that uses only water, temperature, and time. Green coffee beans are soaked in pure water to create Green Coffee Extract (GCE), a solution loaded with all the water-soluble compounds found in coffee. That GCE is then passed through carbon filters which selectively trap caffeine molecules while letting the flavour compounds through. Fresh beans are then immersed in this caffeine-free, flavour-saturated GCE. Through natural diffusion, caffeine migrates out of the beans, but the flavour stays put because the solution is already saturated with those compounds. The result is coffee that's 99.9% caffeine-free with zero chemical residue. This is the only method Raw Bean uses. You can read more in our Swiss Water Process guide.
Supercritical CO2 Process — Uses pressurised carbon dioxide to extract caffeine. Efficient, leaves no chemical residue, and preserves flavour well. The downside is high energy demands.
Ethyl Acetate (Sugar Cane) Process — Uses ethyl acetate, a compound found naturally in fruits, as a solvent. Sometimes marketed as "natural decaf" because of this. The catch: ethyl acetate isn't flavour-neutral, and of all the methods, it has the biggest impact on the original taste of the beans.
Methylene Chloride Process — The cheapest and most widely used method. Effective at removing caffeine, but methylene chloride is classified as a suspected carcinogen. Residues are strictly regulated in the UK and EU, but they are still present in trace amounts. This is what most budget supermarket decafs use.
All four methods can achieve 99.9% caffeine removal, and all are approved by the UK Food Standards Agency and EFSA. We use Swiss Water exclusively because it preserves the most flavour and uses no chemicals.
3. Is decaf coffee 100% caffeine-free?
No. There's always a small trace left. UK and EU regulations require decaf to be at least 99.9% caffeine-free by dry weight. A cup of decaf might have 1-5mg of caffeine, compared to 70-140mg+ in a regular cup.
To put that in context, a bar of dark chocolate has more caffeine than a cup of decaf. If you're avoiding caffeine for health reasons, decaf is about as close to zero as real coffee gets.
4. Does decaf coffee taste different from regular coffee?
It can taste slightly different, but a good decaf should keep the vast majority of the original bean's character. Caffeine itself is bitter, so removing it can make the cup a bit smoother and less sharp. Some people notice a slightly gentler aroma or less brightness.
Modern decaffeination — especially the Swiss Water Process — does a brilliant job of preserving flavour compounds. Our Definitely Decaf range has won multiple Great Taste Awards, and "I didn't know decaf could taste this good" is probably the most common feedback we get. So yes, there might be subtle differences. But premium decaf shouldn't leave you feeling like you're missing out.
5. Is decaf coffee safe to drink during pregnancy?
Most healthcare professionals say yes. The NHS recommends limiting caffeine to 200mg per day during pregnancy — that's roughly one regular coffee. A cup of decaf has about 1-2mg, well under that limit.
Because the Swiss Water Process uses no chemical solvents, there's no concern about residue either. For expecting mums who miss their daily coffee, decaf is a straightforward swap. As always, talk to your midwife or GP if you have specific concerns.
6. Is the Swiss Water Process better than other decaffeination methods?
We think so, and we're not alone. The Swiss Water Process is 100% chemical-free: just water, time, and temperature. It preserves more of the coffee's original character than solvent-based methods, and there's zero risk of chemical residue.
All the common methods are considered safe, and each can produce decent coffee. But in the specialty coffee world, Swiss Water is particularly valued for keeping the subtle origin flavours that make a bean interesting. It's more expensive to produce — which is partly why premium decafs cost a bit more — but we think the difference in the cup justifies it. 7. Does decaf coffee have the same health benefits as regular coffee?
Mostly, yes. Coffee beans are packed with antioxidants, polyphenols, and minerals. Decaffeination removes the caffeine, but the other beneficial compounds stay put.
A 2022 study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that people drinking two to three cups a day — whether decaf or caffeinated — had a significant reduction in cardiovascular disease risk and mortality compared to non-coffee drinkers. This suggests the health benefits come from coffee's antioxidants, not the caffeine.
The one difference: you lose the specific effects of caffeine itself, like the alertness boost or its possible role in Parkinson's disease risk reduction. 8. Is decaf coffee a diuretic?
No. The mild diuretic effect of regular coffee comes from the caffeine. Since decaf has virtually none, it doesn't make you need the loo any more than drinking the same amount of water would. The British Heart Foundation confirms that decaf coffee and tea "have almost no caffeine, they are not considered diuretic and will also not dehydrate you."
So yes, your afternoon decaf counts towards your 6-8 cups a day.
9. Can decaf coffee help me sleep better?
If caffeine is what's keeping you up, then yes. Caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours, which means even an afternoon coffee can linger into the evening. Decaf removes that problem entirely.
If you enjoy a coffee after dinner but find yourself staring at the ceiling at midnight, switching to decaf is the simplest fix. With only about 2mg per cup, it's not going to keep your brain buzzing.
10. Is decaf coffee acidic?
A little less than regular, but not by much. The acidity in coffee comes from organic acids in the beans — chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, citric acid — not from the caffeine. Removing the caffeine might make the cup feel slightly smoother, but the pH is similar.
If acidity bothers you, the roast level and brew method matter more than whether it's decaf. Dark roasts are less acidic than light roasts, and cold brew is significantly gentler than hot-brewed coffee. Cold-brewed decaf is about as easy on the stomach as coffee gets.
11. Can I drink decaf coffee if I have acid reflux or GORD?
Decaf is generally a better choice than regular coffee if you have reflux. Caffeine can relax the lower oesophageal sphincter — the valve at the top of your stomach — which can trigger symptoms. Removing the caffeine eliminates that particular trigger. The NHS lists caffeine among the food and drink triggers to cut down on if you experience heartburn or acid reflux.
That said, decaf still contains some acids and compounds that might bother very sensitive stomachs. Start with a small cup and see how you get on. A darker roast, milk or a non-dairy alternative, or cold-brewed decaf can all help reduce acidity further. For more on this topic, see our coffee and health FAQ.
12. How should I store decaf coffee?
Same as any good coffee: airtight container, away from light, heat, moisture, and strong smells. A cool, dark cupboard is ideal. Don't put it in the fridge — coffee absorbs odours and moisture.
If you want to freeze whole beans for long-term storage, use a properly airtight bag and don't take them in and out repeatedly. And if you can, grind fresh. Whole beans stay fresher longer, and grinding just before you brew makes a noticeable difference.

13. Does decaf coffee go stale faster than regular coffee?
It can. The decaffeination process makes the beans slightly more porous, which means they oxidise a bit faster. You might find decaf loses its peak flavour sooner than the same bean as regular.
The practical advice is the same either way: buy in quantities you'll use within a few weeks, store it properly, and check for a roast date on the bag. Stale decaf won't make you ill — it just tastes flat and a bit woody.

14. Can decaf coffee cause dehydration?
No. The diuretic effect of coffee comes from caffeine, and decaf has almost none. A cup of decaf hydrates you about as much as a cup of water. The NHS includes tea and coffee in daily fluid intake recommendations, and decaf has an even smaller impact than regular.
Short answer: no, your decaf isn't drying you out.
15. Is decaf coffee more expensive than regular coffee?
Usually, yes — a bit. The higher cost comes from the extra processing step. After the beans are harvested and processed normally, they have to go through an additional decaffeination process, often at a specialised facility. That means extra logistics, labour, and equipment.
Among decaf methods, Swiss Water is one of the pricier ones because it's thorough, chemical-free, and done in smaller batches focused on quality. Solvent methods like methylene chloride are cheaper. So a roaster using Swiss Water decaf is paying a premium for those green beans, and that cost gets passed on.
You might see a bag of decaf cost a pound or two more than the same roaster's regular coffee. We think it's worth it — you're getting all the flavour without the caffeine, and nothing artificial in the cup.
